We went on an awesome family hike last month. Dave, Spencer and Dallin had already done the hike with the scouts. Dave thought it would probably be too difficult for the whole family, but maybe we could do an easier hike around the base of the mountain. I told him I thought we could do it, and we should at least give it a try. We could take it slow or turn around if it got to be too much.
It was a steep 2 miles to the summit, gaining 1,650 feet in elevation, and it was hot and dry.
We were always so happy to find shade! We took it slow with lots of breaks, but it was still pretty hard for Brennan and Levi. Dave and I each took a hand and gave lots of encouragement.
There were lots of pretty views going up.
Chloe slept most of the way up.
We made it! Even though it was hard, it was SO worth it. At 2,624' elevation, it's one of the highest points in the county, and the view was spectacular. We could see San Luis Obispo, Morro Bay, San Simeon, Atascadero and Paso Robles.
They found the geocache at the top! That's definitely a favorite.
My legs were sore for a few days. We need to do this more often.
Levi did great going up, but he was very nervous going down because he was afraid he was going to fall. Dave had to carry him for a bit.
Overall, it was a huge success. HOWEVER, Tyler got attacked by poison oak. The first half of the path was totally surrounded, and he tried really hard to stay out of it. But he so incredibly allergic to the stuff that he just has to be in the general vicinity, and he gets a systemic reaction. Thank goodness for oral Prednisone.
