Some proud mama moments...

I love the scripture about small and simple things bringing to pass great things because I think it is the epitome of parenthood. We work so hard doing the same little things over and over without any indication it's making a difference...taking kids to music lessons, sports and scouts, reminding them to practice their instruments, reading scriptures together, staying up late helping with homework, making them do chores, etc. And then, every once in awhile, we get a little inkling, such as an award or a concert or finding out they've done something extra nice, and we realize all those little things really do matter!

This was one of those moments. One night Spencer got a call from someone in the local scout office, informing him that he had won Varsity Scout of the Year for the Los Padres Council. We had no idea who nominated him or how he got it.

We attended a special tri tip dinner and awards night and found out that people had observed him helping an elderly lady who showed up at the church during a Pow Wow. He went out of his way to help her find someone she was looking for, made a few phone calls, taught her chauffeur how to add contact names and numbers to his iPhone, and was just super nice to them. How cool is that?!

On President's Day Tyler performed at four different nursing homes with his violin teacher and three other students for a senior outreach. He woke up early on his day off and was gone the whole day. That night he had all county band practice. It was an exhausting day, but he loved it!

He worked hard to get into the middle school honor band (he was one of only 5 alto saxes in the county to get in). It was a really good experience for him, and we thoroughly enjoyed his concert at the Performing Arts Center in San Luis Obispo.

Spencer has recently joined the high school jazz band, playing piano. He squeezes it in between seminary and school every morning. We got to see them perform at Cuesta College for Festival at 7:30 on a Saturday morning! It was early, but we loved it!

Brennan performed a persuasive essay he wrote called Why all Students Should Be Allowed to Bike to School at the school district Almond Blossom Festival. He did so great!! Everyone went nuts over him (how could they not?!).

There were only 2 kids from his class who were in it, and they both won! They even got free shirts. There were multiple categories (most people recited poems or performed skits), and Brennan was the only one from his category who showed up. So he won by default, but I was still proud of him for performing in front of everyone!

We had to stop and get a doughnut on the way home.

The middle school started having an awards night for academics - Dallin has gotten straight A's this year. What's really cool is that we have gotten emails from three of his teachers, out of the blue, telling us how much they enjoy having him in their class.

And finally, I love how willing my kids are to clean the church! They get all excited when we tell them it's our turn, and they work super hard the whole time. Maybe if we had this cool mop thing at home, they'd be just as excited to clean our house!
