Finally, SNOW!

This was the first year we've been able to go to the snow in 3 years! That's because there hasn't been any snow, with the drought and all. We usually like to rent a cabin and spend a couple of days there, since it's three hours away; but we have to reserve it way in advance because they fill up fast. And then we never know for sure if there will even be snow when we go. It's tricky. So this year we did it a little different. I saw that Shaver Lake got tons of snow one week, so we decided Friday night to just go the next day! It worked out great!

We hadn't been in so long that I didn't know if we even had snow stuff for everyone to wear, and I didn't have much time to gather it up. We've gradually collected things over the years, and we only had to borrow a few things from the cousins.

The place we like to go is Shaver Lake Village Hotel. It's our favorite because it has a huge hill right behind it, perfect for sledding. But they were booked, so we couldn't get a room. We asked them if we could still sled on their hill, and they said yes!  They're super nice there.

Chloe LOVED the snow. She played in it all day and never got cold or sad. I was kind of amazed. Of course she didn't remember it - the last time we went she was only a year old.

We got there around 11 and played until after dark. It was plenty of time, and we were home by 9:00.

So this was interesting. Do you see how swollen Levi's eyes look? Well he had a little cold after Christmas with a viral conjunctivitis (pink eye). No big deal. But the swelling got worse and worse, even after his cold was over. It didn't bother him, and he seemed otherwise fine - just a little congested. I took him to the doctor a few days after we went to the snow (which I rarely do) because it was getting even worse, and I thought there was something else going on. His pediatrician ordered some blood tests, and it turned out he had Mono! I was surprised he wasn't more sick than he was!

Tyler and Brennan made the snowman. The snow was wet and perfect for making snowmen, snowballs and forts.

The sun came out and warmed things up. We were all shedding layers before long.

They had a huge snowball fight - everyone against Dad.

It was about mid-afternoon when Spencer had his snowboarding accident. The front of his board got stuck in some loose snow, and his body was bent backwards as his board flew back and hit the top of his head. He got a scalp laceration identical to the one Dave got exactly 1 week before! We debated what to do - should we go home? Find an urgent care? His back was really hurting him. Dave gave him a blessing, and we all said personal prayers. We knew he would be okay and that we could stay for a couple more hours. Dave sewed him up in the car - 6 stitches, just like Dave's head! I am so thankful for the priesthood and personal revelation!

A lovely side-by-side, Dave on the left, Spencer on the right. They're facing each other, you know, a week apart.

I'm so thankful Dave keeps this stuff on hand! He did need to stop at a little store next to the hotel to get gauze and hydrogen peroxide

Since we didn't have a hotel room, we set up our camping table next to our car and made hot chocolate and bean burritos for dinner. It was awesome.

We love this place! Now that we know we can just go for the day and still sled on their awesome hill, we can do it every year without having to plan too far in advance.
