Geocaching

Spencer got a G.P.S. for Christmas. It's the kind for hiking, not driving. As you know from the boys' blog, he has really gotten into geocaching lately; but his little cheap GPS was often way off in the coordinates. He LOVES this one, and we have been finding and hiding geocaches all over the county. We went to the beach the Saturday after Christmas and placed a cache along the hike we like to do there.

This is such a perfect family activity. The geocache gives us an excuse to hike and explore a place we might otherwise not even know about, and it provides something extra to do at the places where we go often.

Plus everyone loves it - not just Spencer. We only find them about 50% of the time, so it's always a big deal when we do.

I think everyone has had a chance to be the first to find a cache, which is cool.

Spencer logs all his finds and loves getting emails that other people have found the ones he's set up. He's placed three so far and found close to 20. Recently the geocaching club from Cal Poly found the first one he set up and left him a great compliment. That was exciting!

I think all of Spencer's dates with dad over the past few months have included geocaching.

We forgot the back carrier, but Chloe enjoyed walking. Needless to say, it was more of a leisurely walk with lots of stops than a serious hike.

During one of our stops, Dave and the older boys threw pine cones and tried to hit trees far away while Brennan, Levi and Chloe played with fallen trees. It was a fun little hike.
