A Day in the Redwoods

We spent 3 nights at a cabin in the redwoods 7 hours north of San Francisco. It was lovely.

The key to camping is impeccable planning, and I did a pretty dang good job this year.

We were near Crescent City, which is just a few miles south of the Oregon border. It's near the coast, so it was pretty chilly. The temperatures didn't fluctuate much from 60 degrees, day and night. The only thing I would have packed more of is jeans and sweatshirts. Good thing the KOA had laundry facilities.

Our first full day there was a little ambitious. We did a 6 mile hike where they filmed Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. It's where the Ewoks lived. Of course we had to watch it again when we got home, and it was awesome to see how exactly the same it looked.

I LOVE coastal redwoods, the tallest trees in the world. This particular area is what they call newer growth, so they aren't quite as huge and old as what we saw the next day.

Levi loves to pose for pictures!

Chloe did SO great hanging out in the carrier.

I said the hike was ambitious because Levi got tired after a few miles and Dave had to carry him on and off for the last few miles.

This is the Boy Scout tree, which is also the name of the hike. It's huge!

This is the waterfall at the end of the hike - a lovely place to eat our picnic lunch.

Dallin took his new pocket knife and spent every spare minute whittling.

Cool mossy trees.

I love all the fern, but just wait until you see pictures from our fern hike the next day!

Superdad, carrying both kids by the end.

Taking a break, waiting for people to catch up.

When we got back to camp I made skillet cornbread and chili for dinner. This was SO good - a little burned on the bottom, but we just cut that part off.

Brennan led the way almost the whole hike! We were amazed.

Chili was the perfect choice for this night. It was super quick and tasty.

After dinner the kids rented these fun "banana peel" bikes.

They're like the green machine, but you turn by leaning your body. They rode all around the campground.

They LOVED them, and now they all want one for Christmas.

Biscuit-covered marshmallows for dessert - yum!

It felt so good to sleep in a real bed each night. I LOVED staying in a cabin!

Wow! What an amazing trip! I agree with Megan, the pictures are seriously gorgeous. Love the one of Chloe sleeping, what a sweetie. Dave really is a superdad, too. Looks like a great time was had by all.
