We went on a family hike at Valencia Peak a few Saturdays ago. The last time we did this hike was Thanksgiving, and it was rather chilly. In fact it's usually pretty cold there, since it's right next to the coast. But alas, this was not a cool day. It was downright HOT. We kept apologizing to Kristen's family; most of them had never done this hike before.
We love this hike because it has great ocean views the whole way up and down.
And lots of fun little lizards.
It's steep, but not too bad. Although it felt a lot steeper than usual, being a hot day and all.
We made it to the top! Here's the welcoming committee. This was actually supposed to be a Boy Scout shake-down hike for their backpacking trip this summer (which is why they were wearing their big backpacks), but only the boys in our 2 families were able to go. So we made it a family hike instead.
It was a pretty clear day. There's Morro Bay in the distance.
Spooner's Cove on the right.
The whole group! I used the tripod and timer for this. It only took two tries - not bad!
Levi did great, but he told me after, "The next time I hear we're hiking more than two miles, I'm not going."
Time to head back down. We were going to eat lunch at the top, but we all felt just a tad too hot and queasy from the hike. Plus we ate trail mix the whole way up. So we ate our sandwiches when we got back to our cars instead.
About halfway down, Levi got a sharp side cramp. So Dave put him on his shoulders and carried both kids for awhile. Super dad!
