San Francisco Zoo

We left the redwoods Wednesday and drove down to Santa Rosa, which is just north of San Francisco. We stayed at a nice hotel with a hot tub in our suite. That felt especially good after such a long drive. Then Thursday we drove to San Francisco. This isn't the best picture of the Golden Gate Bridge - I took it from the car. They had this really cool thing where we didn't have to stop to pay the toll. Instead they took a picture of our license plate as we drove through, and then they sent us a bill a couple weeks later. I love technology.

We decided to stop in San Francisco to break up the trip, and then we thought it would be fun to go to the zoo while we were there. We hadn't been to a zoo in 2 years. It was a good size zoo - bigger than Santa Barbara but smaller than San Diego. We saw plenty of animals without getting too exhausted.

Cute lemurs

The main thing Levi wanted to see was kangaroos. Good thing they had them.

I love poisonous frogs - they're so colorful!

This is a little blurry, since it was taken through glass, but check out the claws on that grizzly bear!

The endangered black rhino

The hippo was hard to see in the water, but we were happy they had one. Of course we all quoted 2 year old Tyler at the Fresno Zoo. "Gook! Bippo!" Translation: Look! Hippo! It was one of his favorite animals at the time.

The San Francisco Zoo got some publicity a few years ago when a lion escaped and killed a man. Apparently he and his friends had been taunting it. This is one of the first zoos with natural enclosures, and they didn't think the lion would be able to jump so far. Anyway, now there is really high glass around the lions.

The snow leopard, also endangered.

My little primates.

It was cute watching this baby giraffe running full speed down a hill.

The only thing we wished they had were elephants. But overall, a great zoo.
